Mike Stern Band with Richard Bona (bass) Dennis Chambers (drums) Leni Stern (guitar/vocals) Bob Franceschini (saxophone)
One of the great jazz guitarists of his generation, Mike Stern has the unique ability to play with the finesse and lyricism of Jim Hall, the driving swing of Wes Montgomery and the turbulent, overdriven attack of Jimi Hendrix. Growing up in the Washington, D.C. area, Stern revered all three of those guitar immortals, along with such potent blues guitarists as Albert and B.B. King. Aspects of those seminal influences can be heard in his playing on the 18 recordings he has released as a leader or in his acclaimed sideman work for Miles Davis, Billy Cobham, the Brecker Brothers, Jaco Pastorius, Steps Ahead, David Sanborn, Blood, Sweat & Tears, Joe Henderson and the all-star Four Generations of Miles band.
Richard Bona is a Grammy-winning musician, one of the most accomplished international bass players, composers and multi-instrumentalists. With his unique sound and vocal gift he is continuously representing his African origins. Bona’s music addresses the continent’s traditions, culture, beauty and issues. His purpose, and the way he connects with his audience has turned him into a staple name in world, jazz and Afropop music.
Grammy Award-winning jazz bassist Richard Bona was first inspired to play electric bass by the late Jaco Pastorius.
The Cameroon-born artist’s balletically light-stepping runs, lazily grooving ostinatos and rhythmic eruptions are what brings in the jazz fans, but it’s Cuban, Brazilian and Caribbean dance music, Afro-beat and African traditional songs gives his music a much broader appeal.
Having played with such diverse artists such as George Benson, Joe Zawinul and Chaka Khan, it’s with great pleasure that we welcome him back to our stage after a seven year absence.
