Paul Hemmings Celebrates New CD/DVD with
“Duke on Uke: 18 Duke Ellington Compositions Arranged for Ukulele”
December 11 at 9:45pm
Birdland Theater

Hemmings’ upcoming appearance at the Birdland Theater will celebrate the launch of DUKE ON UKE: 18 Duke Ellington Compositions Arranged for Ukulele, a multimedia endeavor encompassing a CD/DVD of solo ukulele performances, a book of sheet music with play-along recordings, and an interactive website. “As arguably the most important composer in American history, I felt Ellington’s music ought to be better represented on the instrument,” says Hemmings. “But what started out as a simple book of ukulele arrangements soon blossomed into a much larger project.” Hemmings will be joined by his regular trio members, Kirk Driscoll on drums and Gabriel Vivas on bass.

Viewing music through a wide-angle lens, Paul Hemmings utilizes the unassuming ukulele to fuse together elements of modern jazz, free improvisation, and American roots music. His proclivity for crossing musical boundaries led All About Jazz to write, "Hemmings' mixture of cultures, influences, and genres, exploring the edges of harmony and rhythm, is remarkably fresh and a complete success." Paul has released six albums on Leading Tone Records, including critically acclaimed recordings with saxophonists John Tchicai and Eric Alexander. His most recent album, The Blues And The Abstract Uke, featured Gaku Takanashi, Rudy Royston, Greg Tardy, and Curtis Fowlkes, and earned a four-star review from Downbeat and a place in the CMJ Jazz Charts’ Top 100.
