Melvis Santa & Ashedí

Cuba has brought up a remarkable convergence of Afro Cuban singers, from Rita Montaner and Merceditas Valdés to Celia Cruz. And now, well into the reestablishment of the relationship between the US and the Caribbean island, New York based singer/songwriter Melvis Santa emerges in that line of amazing musicians as one of the newest voices of Afro Cuban and Latin Jazz. Since her arrival in NYC, Melvis has touched audiences and critics, with a creative and soulful energy that eclipses the boundaries of Cuban rhythms, soul and jazz parameters. Her debut CD as a leader, Santa Habana, was critically acclaimed and nominated for the Cubadisco Awards in 2012. Her new compositions feature her project Ashedí, consisting of piano and batá drums.

Havana born artist Melvis Santa started classical piano studies at the age of 7 and made a splash on the Cuban musical scene at 14, when she founded the collective vocal group Sexto Sentido, a project that jazz great Chucho Valdés deemed as “the best Cuban vocal quartet of the past 30 years” in 2007. The ensemble won the first prize of the Jo-Jazz (Cuban Youth Jazz competition) in 2001. In 2010 Melvis spread her wings and appeared as one of the lead vocalists of Interactivo, a seminal fusion band in Cuba, recording and touring worldwide. Based in New York since 2014, she continues to make a mark as a performer and educator teaching Afro Cuban music and dance workshops at NYU, CUNY Graduate Center, The Spence School, Tulane University of New Orleans, among others.

As a performer Melvis has collaborated with greats such as Andy Bey, Ravi Coltrane, Steve Coleman and The Five Elements, David Virelles, Roman Diaz, Gilles Peterson and Havana Cultura, Adam Cruz, Linda Oh, Fabian Almazan, Bill O`Connell & The Latin Jazz All Stars, Emeline Michel, Les Nubians, Chucho Valdés, Michel Legrand, Joao Donato, Emilio Santiago, Descemer Bueno, Telmary Diaz, Buena Vista Social Club, Danza Contemporánea de Cuba, Silvio Rodríguez, Jane Bunnett and Maqueque. Muñequitos de Matanzas, Rumberos de Cuba, and Team Cuba de La Rumba.
