Singer/composer/artist Judi Silvano, who brings her formidable talents as a singer and songwriter to Birdland, is a well known presence in the New York Jazz scene. She has performed and collaborated with a who’s who of jazz including Kenny Werner, Joe Lovano, Bill Frisell, George Garzone, Mike Formanek, Gerry Hemingway, Michael Abene, Rufus Reid, Ingrid Jensen, Charlie Haden, Jack DeJohnette, Vic Juris, and Gunther Schuller. She’s performed at a multitude of festivals and concert houses around the globe as well as numerous clubs and concert halls in NYC.

In her stint at Birdland she will be presenting material from her recently released CD of all original songs, “Lessons Learned.” This project with her 2-guitar Zephyr Band brings her personal stories of life and love to the fore in unique original songs about a life fully lived.
“Silvano's voice is mature, rich and melodic and she presents her life lessons as stimulating, happy music…This is fun stuff…
—All about Jazz

Grammy winner and sax-master Joe Lovano produced the CD and will be on hand to add his signature sound to the varied musical mix. Silvano’s songs are not confined to a strictly jazz setting- she is too adventurous for such restrictions and brings in elements of calypso, blues and bolero.

“Judi Silvano has presented jazz with poetry in several projects, has recorded classic songs with unusual ensembles and has founded several successful vocal ensembles. Again and again, Silvano breaks out of the well-established waters of vocal jazz.” –Concerto Magazine

Other recent recordings include lyrical free improvisations with guitarist Bruce Arnold, “Cloudwalking” (out January 2019) which follows their 2016 release “Listen To This” (Muse Eek), an adventurous set of sonic landscapes featuring digital effects on both the guitar (SuperCollider) and vocals (Eventide).

Her 2015 release “My Dance”(JSL) features Judi in a duo setting with veteran pianist Michael Abene. “Peerless improvisations… Memorable lyrics…” (jazzhistoryonline.com) Silvano’s 2012 release “Indigo Moods” (Jazzed Media) features her favorite Standard songs in Trio with Piano and Trumpet: “Channeling the spirits of Rosemary Clooney and Ella Fitzgerald, Silvano takes her own path, mining the immense colors and moods of her material.” (Down Beat Magazine) and “The joy of singing is an essential ingredient to vocal music-making and this joy comes through in every note that Judi Silvano sings.” (Dianne Reeves, Grammy winner and acclaimed jazz singer).

She has won Meet the Composer grants, champions the work of under-performed American Women Composers (her “Women’s Work” CD) and her chamber music has been played in NYC and Europe for New York Women Composers, Vox Musica and Ars Nova concerts. Her broad inspiration has led her to develop Educational Workshops called “Pathways to Music and Dance” (winning two New York State Council on the Arts grants), being named Top 10 Vocalist in Downbeat Magazine four times, Best Jazz Singer in the Hudson Valley and writing articles for All About Jazz & Jazz Improv Magazine.
Ms. Silvano is also a fine artist, and her painting graces the cover of “Lessons Learned.”
