Anita Gillette Celebrates Irving Berlin
"Me & Mr. B"
Sunday and Monday, March 25 and 26
Birdland

The Broadway at Birdland concert series is proud to announce that Broadway/Television actress Anita Gillette will perform a loving tribute to her friend Irving Berlin on the stage Sunday and Monday, March 25 and 26.

In 1962, Kennedy was in the White House, "West Side Story" was lighting up the big screen, and that beguiling Broadway ingenue Anita Gillette was granted the opportunity of working with one of her biggest idols, (who also just happened to be one of American Popular Music's most beloved songwriters) Irving Berlin. A lavish, eagerly anticipated Broadway show (Mr. President) brought these two talented forces together, for what would be Berlin's last new musical for the Main Stem. Although Mr. President ran a scant nine months, the burgeoning "father-daughter" relationship between singer and songwriter continued successfully for many years thereafter. In her latest cabaret outing, "Me and Mr. B," Ms. Gillette offers some pert reminiscences and wise observations about those times with the man she called "Mr. B," punctuating her show biz reporting with a selection of songs from Mr. B's repertoire. She'll reprise some of her Mr. President moments, including one number that was written especially for her ("The Secret Service") as well as offer her own delivery of gems from the Berlin treasure trove. Gillette believes that Berlin's music not only influenced her during their years of camaraderie, but provided lasting impact on her entire life from childhood to today. The evening is directed by Barry Kleinbort, with musical direction by Paul Greenwood at the piano, Ritt Henn on bass, Dan Gross on drums, and special guest David L. Harris on trombone. "Me and Mr. B" offers a first-hand accounting of both the man who provided America with some of its most enduring songs and a young, up-and-coming Broadway musical star who got to be a part of that journey.

Anita Gillette debuted her one woman show "After All" at Birdland and won a MAC Award and a Bistro Award. She has also performed concerts at Feinsteins, 54 Below, The Metropolitan Room, Cape May Stage, London's St. James Studio and Don't Tell Mama. Probably best known as Miss Mona in "Moonstruck," or Miss Mitzi in "Shall We Dance," her other feature films include: "The Fitzgerald Family Christmas," "Boys On The Side," "Larger Than Life," "She's the One," "The Guru," "Bob Roberts," and "The Great New Wonderful." She starred in fourteen Broadway shows including: Chapter Two (Tony Nomination, LA Drama Critics Award), Cabaret (Sally Bowles), Carnival, Gypsy, Guys & Dolls, Don't Drink The Water, All American, Jimmy, They're Playing Our Song, Brighten Beach Memoirs, and Mr. President. She was Tina Fey's mother on "30 Rock," a series regular on "Quincy," "Almost Grown," and more. She was a foil for Johnny Carson for at least 50 "Tonight Show" appearances.
