Kurt Rosenwinkel & OJM (Orquestra Jazz de Matosinhos)
Kurt Rosenwinkel -- arguably the most influential jazz guitarist of his generation -- first gained attention in the 1990s as a sideman in groups led by legendary jazz figures, vibraphonist Gary Burton and drummer Paul Motian. Rosenwinkel later signed with Verve Records and released several acclaimed CDs with contemporary collaborators such as Brad Mehldau, Joshua Redman, Chris Potter and Q-Tip, among others. While he was primarily known for showcasing his blistering solos and stunning rhythmic interplay in smaller groups, Rosenwinkel was quietly collaborating with several European jazz orchestras in the intervening years. The recorded result is the 2010 CD release titled, "Our Secret World," with the 15-year-old Portuguese ensemble known as Orquestra Jazz de Matosinhos (OJM). All About Jazz proclaims that the ensemble demonstrates "surprisingly deep understanding of [Rosenwinkel's] most difficult compositions… a complex combination of rich timbres, knotty counterpoint and effortless, Afro-centric polyrhythms vividly contextualizing and recontextualizing Rosenwinkel's solos." Together they form, "an ethereal mélange with heavily overdriven and harmonized guitar… blended so seamlessly as to create a singular whole that has never sounded so distinctive."
