TeatroStageFest, the Latino International Theater Festival of New York, and the Ministry of Culture of Buenos Aires present Piazzolla Plays Piazzolla at Birdland, featuring Daniel Piazzolla on drums and his Jazz sextet Escalandrum. This historic concert pays tribute to Astor Piazzolla (1921-1992), world renowned virtuoso bandoneón player and groundbreaking composer of Argentina's Nuevo (New) Tango. With Special Guests Paquito D’Rivera and Ute Lemper.
Buenos Aires based Escalandrum introduces in New York its critically acclaimed album Piazzolla Plays Piazzolla, recently nominated to Argentina's 2012 Gardel Music Awards as "Best Jazz Album" and "Best Album of the Year" The concerts mark the final stop in the band's “2012: The Year of Piazzolla” world tour to Milan, Rome, Paris, Copenhagen, Warsaw, Lisbon, Barcelona, and Bogota. Escalandrum was founded in 1999 by Astor's grandson Daniel, and these concerts conmemorate a masterful composer who broke away from traditional Tango by incorporating elements of Jazz. Two generations of Piazzolla musicianship at their best!
Daniel ¨Pipi¨Piazzolla (drums) Nicolás Guerschberg (piano) Mariano Sívori (bass) Damián Fogiel (tenor sax) Martín Pantyrer (bass clarinet, baritone sax) Gustavo Musso (alto sax, soprano sax) Horacio Sarria (manager)
