"Salute to Bobby Hutcherson"

The New York Daily News heralded pianist Cyrus Chestnut as the rightful heir to Bud Powell, Art Tatum, and Erroll Garner. The Baltimore native, "a highly intelligent improviser with one of the surest senses of swing in jazz," (New York Times) grew up in a home filled with the sounds of gospel music along with jazz records by Thelonious Monk and Jimmy Smith. After graduating from Berklee, Chestnut went on to work with jazz vocalists Jon Hendricks and Betty Carter as well as trumpeters Terence Blanchard and Wynton Marsalis. Cyrus was signed to Atlantic Records and Warner Brothers where he made several acclaimed trio recordings and collaborated with Freddie Hubbard, Chick Corea, the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, the Boston Pops, Kathleen Battle, Anita Baker, Bette Midler, and Isaac Hayes. In 2000 Cyrus collaborated with Vanessa Williams, Brian McKnight, and the Boys Choir of Harlem on an updated version of Vince Guaraldi's “A Charlie Brown Christmas.” For this engagement he leads an all-star quartet.
