Frank Perowsky Jazz Orchestra Record Release Party

Frank Perowsky, NYC legendary wood windist/arranger brings his Jazz Orchestra to Birdland for a CD release party of their debut album “An Afternoon in Gowanus”. Produced by Frank’s son and drummer, Ben Perowsky.

FPJO is a world class band filled with some of the finest instrumentalists in NYC. A number of players have worked with Frank in bands such as Thad Jones and Woody Herman, while other players have been associated with Frank’s son/drummer and producer Ben Perowsky. This ensemble spans generations bringing a unique mixture of personalities, expressions and excitement to the sound and approach to their repertoire. Special Guests TBA

Frank Perowsky, is an NYC based saxophonist, clarinetist and arranger who throughout his career has toured or performed with such artists as Peggy Lee, Sarah Vaughan, Billy Eckstine, Nancy Wilson, Frank Sinatra, Mel Torme, Michel Legrand and Stan Getz, Tito Rodriguez, Johnny Richards, Bill Watrous' big band, Roland Hanna, Thad Jones/Mel Louis, Mike Longo and played in Liza Minnelli’s band. Upon graduating from The Juilliard School of Music as a clarinet major in 1958 Frank began his career in the big bands of Jimmy Dorsey, Woody Herman, Les and Larry Elgart playing the jazz tenor chair. While at Juilliard he studied composition and orchestration with Pulitzer Prize winner, Henry Brandt. His arrangements/orchestrations have been featured by the Buddy Rich Band, Liza Minelli, A Chorus Line and numerous other artists.

Ben Perowsky’s notable career has placed him among a small vanguard of players able to move between jazz, experimental music and cutting edge pop and rock. He cut his teeth as a youth playing drums for the likes of Rickie Lee Jones, John Cale, Roy Ayers, James Moody, Bob Berg, Mike Stern and Michael Brecker. He broke ground driving back beats for NY bands Elysian Fields and Joan as Policewoman as well as John Lurie’s Lounge Lizards. He Co-founded the electric jazz group Lost Tribe and has continued to record and perform with pop and jazz legends such as John Scofield, Belle and Sebastian, John Zorn, Dave Douglas, Lou Reed, Pat Martino, Tegan and Sara, Uri Caine, Steven Bernstein, Walter Becker, Vernon Reid, Loudon, Martha and Rufus Wainwright. Ben has produced 8 critically acclaimed records to date. He currently plays in a band called RedCred with John Medeski and Chris Speed. He also co-produced and launched the Woodstock Jazz Festival in 2010 and is the drummer/ percussionist for the critically acclaimed musical by Anaïs Mitchell, “Hadestown”.
